टीएचई रैंकिंग में IISC को मिला भारत की अव्वल यूनिवर्सिटी का दर्जा

लंदन : ब्रिक्स और अन्य उभरती अर्थव्यवस्थाओं के विश्वविद्यालयों की नवीनतम रैंकिंग में इंडियन इंस्टिट्यूट ऑफ साइंस (आईआईएससी) को भारत की अव्वल यूनिवर्सिटी का दर्जा मिला है।

द टाइम्स हायर एड्युकेशन (टीएचई) रैंकिंग्स 2015 में शामिल किए गए कुल 100 विश्वविद्यालयों में बेंगलुरु आधारित आईआईएससी को 25वां स्थान मिला है। इस सूची में सर्वोच्च स्थान चीन की पेकिंग यूनिवर्सिटी ने हासिल किया।

नवीनतम रैंकिंग के अनुसार, भारत के चार विश्वविद्यालय शीर्ष 40 में शामिल हैं। इनमें आईआईएससी, आईआईटी बंबई को 37वां स्थान मिला है, जबकि आईआईटी रूड़की को 38वां और चंडीगढ़ की पंजाब यूनिवर्सिटी को 39वां स्थान मिला है। इसके अलावा सात अन्य को शीर्ष 100 में जगह मिली है।

IITs see Rs 1.3-cr salary offer on Day-1 of placement

The placement season has started off with good news for Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) this year, with one IIT recording Rs 1.3 crore salary, while another, IIT, Kanpur, created history by placing 34 students with one company.

"The response from companies has been much better than what we expected. Even salaries offered are better than last year's. This year, the highest salary stands at Rs 1.3 crore per annum from a US-based software major, an increase of 25 per cent," said the placement chairperson from an IIT on condition of anonymity. The IIT refused to divulge more details, saying the company has requested so.

Final placements on IIT campuses began on December 1. First phase of final placements will be held between December 1 and 20 and the second phase will begin on January 6 till April-end, 2014.

"This year, placements have been better than last year in terms of number of participating firms as well as compensation packages. As against 150 firms, this year we anticipate 200 firms coming to the campus. Day one of the placement itself has been spectacular with EXL Servicesmaking of the largest hiring by a single firm of 34 offers including US profiles. This is a first in IIT, Kanpur's, history," said Vimal Kumar, chairperson (raining and placements) at IIT, Kanpur.

Held in two slots, the first day of the placement season at IIT, Kanpur, saw over 20 firms participating from varied sectors such as core engineering, computer science, banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), consulting and analytics, among others. Among the top firms visiting on Day-One included GE, Google, Credit Suisse, ITC, Mitsubishi, Goldman Sachs, Oracle, Schlumberger, Intel and IBM.

IIT, Kanpur, will roughly see 200 firms participating in the placements process for a batch size of over 1,000 students.

Other firms likely to participate at IIT, Kanpur, placements include Oracle, Mitsubishi, Diamond Consulting, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs, among others.

Day-Two of the placement process is expected to see major recruiters such as American Express, Amazon and Citi Group, among others, from sectors including core engineering, consulting, IT, e-commerce and business analytics.

At IIT, Bombay, 1,600 students will sit for placements this year and the institute expects 250-270 companies to participate. "Some US companies have doubled the salaries this year against what was offered last year," said a placement official.

According to IIT-Bombay, Microsoft, Oracle, LinkedIn, Facebook, Goldman Sachs, Shell and Samsung have confirmed participation in the campus drive so far.

"While some US companies have taken care of their placement requirements through pre-placement offers, there are other companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo which have confirmed participation," said Sudhir Barai, head of training and placement at IIT-Kharagpur.

For IIT-Kharagpur, feedback from recruiters has been very good. "The number of companies participating at IIT-Kharagpur has increased from 180 last year to 220 this year. The feedback from recruiters have been very good and salaries will be higher than last year," said Barai. The batch size at IIT-Kharagpur this year is over 2,000 students.

The IITs also said some companies have dropped out after confirming. "This happens every year as companies take stock of their hiring situation by December. However, salaries offered have been higher," said Kumar.

Other IITs did not respond to an email questionnaire. The placement process on the campuses was on Sunday till late in the evening.

Students of the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras are gearing up for the placement programme starting on December 1.

Babu Viswanathan, adviser, Training and Placement, said that as many as 1,300 names had been registered till Thursday. Around 800 students will be able to take the online tests at a time using their laptops as the institute has provided wireless connectivity.

Recruiters are holding online entrance tests during the weekend. As many as 250 companies with 330 job profiles have registered for the placement programme this year.

Around 70 students have already received pre-placement offers following their summer internships. “We expect placement season to be better this year. Last year, over 65 per cent students were placed through campus recruitment,” Mr. Viswanathan said.

As many as 950 of the 1,450 students registered last year had received job offers.

On the first day of placement which begins one minute past midnight on November 30, “the graveyard shift” for recruitment will begin. Around 10 to 12 profiles from companies such as Microsoft Research, Google, Oracle and VISA will be available. Most profiles are in the research and development area. As with students from engineering colleges, candidates who have taken up computer science engineering get the most lucrative offers and placement exceeds 95 per cent, Last year the highest annual pay package was around 220,000 dollars. Within the country, the highest package offered was Rs. 40 lakh per annum.

Visa Inc to enter IITs with 120 offers, Rs 22 lakh pay package

MUMBAI: First-time recruiter Visa Inc could be a game changer at the Indian Institutes of Technology this placement season as it battles with Google and Facebook to hire the top graduates for local and global positions. 

The world's largest payments network hopes to attract students by dangling a salary of $140,000 plus a relocation bonus for international roles and Rs 22 lakh for domestic hires. The US company confirmed that it will hire 100-120 students from eight IITs, including IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras. Last year's largest recruiters were Samsung with 271 offers, with 177 offers, Oracle 135 offers and Flipkart, which surprised all with 118. 

"We are more than a card company. We will provide technologybased roles and since we have just set shop in India, our work culture will be similar to start-ups. They (students to be hired this year) will be the first ones and will get lots of opportunities," said Nitin Chandel, senior vice president of Visa's Developer Platform based in India 

 Placements at IITs start from December 1 and Visa has bagged the top slots, which means the company will fight it out with veterans such as Google, Facebook, Cisco, Oracle, Samsung and Microsoft for the best candidates. International students will get relocation benefits in addition to their salaries, while domestic placements will be based in Bangalore.
