TOI Report
A sustained campaign by TOI in 2008 saw the IITs re-design their admission infrastructure and now, the tech colleges believe that vacancies must be reduced and it was "criminal" to let spots go unfilled.
"I feel this is great news for the nation. We want to try to reduce the vacancies as much as possible," said chairman JEE (advanced) K V Krishna of IIT-Guwahati. "The six rounds of admissions are possible because the JEE (main) results were declared in time and there was enough time to hold more rounds this year."
Last year, 324 seats remained unfilled at the IITs and a total of 5,550 were vacant at NITs across India. Till last year, the JoSSA conducted three rounds of seat allotment for the IITs followed by one round to choose the students for the one-year-long preparatory course. There were four rounds of seat allotment for the NITs.
This time, after the first round of allotment closed, a total of 10,006 seats were confirmed. At 82 IIT-Kharagpur with the largest pool of seats had the largest vacancies.
This is the first year when the IITs will not charge tuition fees from physically challenged candidates. The decision was taken in the Standing Committee of the IIT Council.
